About Teach SOCIAL Silicon Valley

Teach SOCIAL Silicon Valley (TSSV) is a newly formed nonprofit dedicated to serving individuals and families with social cognitive deficits within Silicon Valley. In addition, we are committed to providing trainings to professionals and schools who work with this population of children and adults. The core philosophy of our clinical work and training is based on the principles of Social Thinking developed by Michelle Garcia Winner. The word SOCIAL in the TSSV name is an acronym for Social & Organizational Concepts for Individuals with social cognitive challenges Across the Lifespan, indicating a dedication to children as well as adults in the home, community, workplace and schools.

Although the name Teach SOCIAL Silicon Valley may be new to the community, the center where the nonprofit currently resides is not. Formally known as Michelle Garcia Winner’s Center for Social Thinking, this well-respected clinic was recently closed and much of the infrastructure was donated to TSSV by Winner. Her center was a hub of social learning for the past 10 years, serving up to 250 children and adults each week, as well as providing trainings to local schools and districts for the past seven years. This tradition of excellence is now embraced by TSSV and will continue within the framework of a California nonprofit.

The clinic portion of TSSV is currently staffed with highly trained therapists knowledgeable in the principles of Social Thinking and able to address the social and organizational issues in children and adults with High Functioning Autism, PDD-NOS, Asperger Syndrome, NVLD, ADHD, and other related social learning disabilities. The clinical piece of TSSV maintains the same high quality of service experienced by families who were a part of Winner’s clinic. Scholarships for services and materials are now available to those individuals and families who may not have been able to access them previously.

The school training portion continues to be an important part of TSSV and will expand as resources become available. TSSV currently has two trained therapists who are able to provide training for educational administrators, teachers, and classroom staff.

Finally, TSSV is dedicated to expanding services for adults with social learning challenges. This is a new and limited service within the clinic, but will continue to be a focus of the nonprofit.
